Funny but family-safe

Humor works at any age. Try Junk Drawer, Dust Bunny or Traffic Jam. Preview words before a round if young children are playing, and skip topics you would rather not discuss.

Using hints fairly

In Classic mode, the Imposter sees a short hint. Keep it on if the youngest player might become the Imposter. Leave Mr. Blank off for younger families, and keep the clue timer off until everyone is confident.

Set up a family round

  1. Add every family member with their own name.
  2. Choose Easy, a category and one Imposter.
  3. Pass the device privately for the role reveal.
  4. Discuss together, then vote.

The Imposter is chosen at random, so parents cannot guess who it is. Use Next Game (Keep Score) for a family tournament.

Keep everyone involved

Let the youngest player give their clue first when possible, and encourage older players to give simple clues. If a child struggles, switch to drawing clues. For child-focused lists, see imposter game words for kids, and for the full set, the complete word list guide. Looking for vocabulary resources at home? Reading Rockets has parent tip sheets.

Talking about pretending

Some children dislike being the person who “lies”. Explain that bluffing is part of the game and that everyone will take a turn at being tricked. Praise good clues from every player, whether or not they find the Imposter.

Mixed-age strategy

  • Pair a younger child with an older one as a team.
  • Use Easy words, then add one Medium word each round.
  • Let the youngest player vote first, then discuss.

A twenty-minute family night

  1. Five minutes: choose a category together.
  2. Ten minutes: play two quick rounds on Easy.
  3. Five minutes: try one Medium word, then check the scoreboard.

Handling frustration

Keep rounds short, praise good clues and switch to drawing clues if spelling gets in the way. If someone is upset, turn the next round into a team round.
