What are imposter game words?
They are the secret words that civilians receive at the start of a round. The Imposter either gets no word, a hint or a similar decoy, and the group has to find out who is bluffing.
The word you choose sets the tone for the whole game. A strong word gives every civilian something to say, yet leaves the Imposter guessing.
How to choose the best imposter words
- Make it familiar. If half the table has never heard of it, the round falls apart.
- Keep it describable. The best imposter words can be hinted at from several angles with a single word.
- Avoid the one obvious clue. If everyone reaches for the same answer, the Imposter can copy it.
- Stay inside a category. Neighboring words make a believable decoy in Sneaky mode.
- Match the group. Easy words suit mixed ages, while hard words suit players who already know the rules.
Word lists for specific groups

How to use these words in the generator
On the main game page, choose a category and difficulty, and the tool picks a random word without repeating one until the whole pool has been used. To play with your own list, choose Custom Words and type them separated by commas. Hints appear only for the Imposter in Classic mode, and Mr. Blank players get no word at all. Playing remotely? Use the online version.
Word list questions
How many imposter game words does the generator have?
It currently includes 301 words across 17 categories, and every word comes with its own hint.
Which difficulty is best for beginners?
Start with Easy. The words are familiar, so everyone can give a clue, and the Imposter still has to listen carefully to blend in.
Can I paste these words into Custom Words?
Yes. Separate them with commas. Custom words don’t carry hints, and Sneaky mode needs at least two of them to pick a decoy.
Do the hints give the word away?
No. Each hint describes the word indirectly and never repeats it, so the Imposter gets a nudge without being handed the answer.
