Use your own subject vocabulary

Choose Custom Words and type unit terms separated by commas, for example photosynthesis, fraction or treaty. Custom words have no hints, and Sneaky mode needs at least two. Students then have to describe each term without naming it.

Running a round in class

  1. Split the class into groups of five to eight, one device per group.
  2. Choose Easy or Medium words and turn on the clue timer.
  3. Have each group follow the pass-and-play steps.
  4. Finish with a short discussion about which clues helped.

For younger students, compare with imposter game words for kids.

A note on claims

This game has not been endorsed by any school or education authority, and we make no claims about learning outcomes. For general vocabulary-teaching ideas, see Reading Rockets. Browse all levels in the word list guide.

A ten-minute classroom activity

  1. Two minutes: explain the rules and show one example.
  2. Five minutes: groups play one round using Easy words from your unit.
  3. Three minutes: groups share one clue that helped and one that gave the word away.

Adapt the difficulty for different grades

These are practical suggestions rather than official standards. Younger groups can use Easy words, pictures and untimed clues. Older groups can use Medium or Hard words with a clue timer, and custom vocabulary from the current unit.

Subject-specific clue ideas

  • Science: describe a word by where it happens, never by its name.
  • Geography: use continents, climates and neighbors as clues.
  • History: use time periods, jobs and places, but not full names.

Keep the game classroom-friendly

  • Review every word before play.
  • Choose groups yourself so no one is left out.
  • Rotate the device so quieter students speak first.
  • Use the discussion to practice describing words clearly.

Try it in class

Open the generator on a classroom device, or use the online version for remote lessons.
